Is Starlink pushing Safaricom to do better?

The telecommunications landscape in Kenya is undergoing a rapid transformation with the entry of Starlink, the global satellite internet provider powered by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet, particularly geared towards underserved and rural areas, is set to disrupt the market long dominated by Safaricom. As the largest telecommunications company in Kenya, Safaricom has responded to this competition with significant innovations in its services, particularly in home and business internet solutions. With the introduction of its new 1000Mbps Platinum plan and revamped offerings for both home and enterprise customers, the question arises: Is Starlink pushing Safaricom to do better?

Safaricom’s dominance and new challenges

Safaricom has been the leading player in Kenya’s telecommunications sector for over two decades, largely unrivaled in the mobile and internet space. Its extensive network coverage and flagship mobile money service, M-Pesa, have cemented its dominance, creating a powerful ecosystem where customers rely on Safaricom for everything from calls and messaging to mobile banking and data services. While Safaricom has been a significant driver of innovation, particularly with the roll-out of 4G and 5G services, its strong market position has also limited competition, making it the de facto provider for most Kenyans.

However, Starlink’s satellite technology presents a new type of competition that Safaricom must now contend with. Starlink offers a unique proposition, using low-Earth orbit satellites to provide high-speed internet access across the globe, including in Kenya’s rural and underserved areas where Safaricom’s fiber and mobile infrastructure may not reach. This gives Starlink a considerable edge in connecting remote locations, an area that Safaricom has struggled to service comprehensively. With Starlink in the picture, Safaricom’s dominance faces a formidable test, one that will likely drive both innovation and customer-centric solutions.

Safaricom’s enhanced internet packages

In response to increasing consumer demands and the growing competition from Starlink, Safaricom has significantly enhanced its internet offerings for both home and business users. On 23rd September 2024, Safaricom introduced the 1000Mbps Platinum Plan at KES 20,000 per month, aimed at heavy users like gamers, content creators, and professionals utilizing bandwidth-intensive applications. This marks the first time such speeds have been offered to Kenyan homes, positioning Safaricom as a leader in premium internet services.

In addition, Safaricom upgraded all its internet packages, boosting speeds for existing customers at no extra cost. The Bronze plan now offers 15Mbps for KES 2,999, and the Diamond plan delivers 500Mbps for KES 12,499, ensuring better value across the board. Safaricom also launched the Family Share Plan, combining mobile voice, data, SMS, and home internet into a single package that can be shared by up to five household members, offering a 20% discount on the Bronze plan, making it more affordable for families.

On the business side, Safaricom revamped its Business Fibre plans, introducing speeds of up to 1 Gbps for medium and large enterprises. These packages include key features such as 24/7 proactive monitoring, network visibility, and 99.99% uptime, ensuring businesses remain connected even during disruptions. For smaller businesses, new options such as a 15Mbps shared plan with 5GB of mobile backup data and 400 minutes of voice calls are now available, designed to offer reliable and flexible solutions for various enterprise needs. These enhancements position Safaricom as a competitive force, ensuring it remains a top choice for both home users and businesses in Kenya’s evolving internet market.

Competition is driving innovation

The entry of Starlink into Kenya’s market is a prime example of how competition can shake up monopolistic or dominant companies, pushing them to offer better services, innovate, and improve customer experiences. Safaricom, while a powerful player, has now had to elevate its game to stay relevant in the face of a new, technologically advanced competitor. Starlink’s satellite-based internet eliminates many of the physical infrastructure constraints that Safaricom has faced, particularly in reaching remote areas. As a result, Safaricom’s efforts to increase the speeds and reliability of its existing services are not just a strategy to retain urban customers but also a preemptive move to maintain dominance in the broader market, including rural areas.

For consumers, this competition has undeniable benefits. Internet prices may become more competitive, particularly as Safaricom continues to enhance its fiber footprint and introduce more attractive packages. The improved speeds and bundled offerings are a direct response to market pressure, which in turn leads to better choices for consumers. Increased competition also encourages Safaricom to continuously innovate, ensuring that it does not fall behind in an increasingly dynamic industry.

The future of Kenyan internet: Safaricom vs Starlink

As Safaricom gears up to celebrate 25 years of operations in the Kenyan market, the company is not complacent. By investing in infrastructure, expanding fiber coverage, and introducing ultra-fast internet packages, Safaricom is actively preparing to meet the challenges posed by Starlink and other potential entrants into the market. Over the last year, Safaricom has increased its fiber footprint by over 3,000 kilometers, now covering more than 17,000 kilometers across the country. This expansion connected over 110,000 new customers in the last financial year, bringing the total number of homes and businesses connected to over 400,000.

The competition between Safaricom and Starlink is a positive development for the Kenyan market. Safaricom is being pushed to do better, and Kenyan consumers are reaping the benefits of improved services, better pricing, and greater choice. The entry of Starlink may signal the beginning of a new era in Kenyan telecommunications, but Safaricom is not backing down. With innovative new products, expanded coverage, and an enhanced focus on customer needs, Safaricom is positioning itself to remain at the forefront of Kenya’s internet revolution.
